DREAM Journey
How did the idea evolve?
In a world where healthcare challenges continue to evolve, the need for fresh ideas and innovative solutions has never been greater. This need has prompted the rise of professionals who are able to bridge the gap between various domains, such as machine learning, data science, and medicine. The DREAM Project was a gateway to an immense opportunity to bridge my knowledge of data science and medicine to promote better outcomes for patients. It offered an avenue to experiment with my tools of trade (some code and medical knowledge) to lay a foundational basis for interdisciplinary and cross-domain innovations in healthcare.
Having signed up for the project during my third year, I had a novice understanding of challenges in healthcare outside of what we studied from our textbooks and community health observerships. However, starting my clinical years while continuing with the DREAM Project exposed gaps in healthcare settings that promoted the need to innovate and use limited resources that make a scalable impact. I also considered the DREAM Project a team effort. Getting to learn about various innovation strategies by fellow contestants, each with a solution to a particular problem in healthcare, was a turning point. It exposed the reality that we are still in need of technology, ideas, research, and patents that would have a massive impact on our communities.
I've gotten to amass immense knowledge, from pitching to effective communication, strategy, and teamwork. I've also learned about the value of showing up to whatever cause you carry. I've gotten valuable networks in the healthcare space, spanning from research opportunities to cross-disciplinary collaboration.
The DREAM Project was also a socially empowering experience. It was organized by a diligent secretariat that gave its best to ensure that we had the space to curate meaningful and impactful solutions. My fellow contestants, whom I consider close friends at heart, were very impactful. We really encouraged each other to stay on track and composed. It was a team effort, one where each of us had the opportunity to solve and innovate but still have fun in the process.
Having gained a lot of experience within the first few months in the DREAM Project, I look forward to more opportunities such as webinars, contests, and conferences. It has also shaped my view of the future doctor, one who understands patients while contributing actively to medical innovation. That spans precision medicine to disease prediction and epidemiological surveillance. I am eager to continue exploring, creating, and contributing to the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare innovation.
Special thanks are extended to Dafra Pharma for generously sponsoring the project. I'm also deeply grateful to the MKUMSA faculty, led by Dr. Paul Sifuna and Dr. Munguti, and the DREAM Secretariat, led by Naomi Bett. Their combined efforts were instrumental in making the DREAM Project a successful and fulfilling endeavor.
